Dominican Republic Implements New Tourism Security Measures
The Dominican Republic’s tourism ministry recently introduced a new commission designed to reassure potential visitors after a troubling series of incidents led to a decline in tourism. This initiative, rolled out by the National Committee of Tourism Security, will combine efforts from public agencies and private enterprises to address several key concerns, emphasizing food and beverage safety, along with enhanced inspection capabilities in tourist areas.
While some unfortunate tourist fatalities were attributed to natural causes, many travelers have reconsidered their plans. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched an inquiry into whether counterfeit alcohol may have played a role in these incidents.
Subsequently, bookings to the Dominican Republic for July and August experienced a staggering drop of over 84% compared to the same period last year, as reported by ForwardKeys.
However, Francisco Javier Garcia, the Dominican tourism minister, expressed a commitment to transparency, stating, “all we want is the truth to come out.” He emphasized the need for reassurance in the face of questions about the safety of the Dominican Republic as a travel destination.
Enhanced Safety Protocols for Travelers
To bolster safety measures, Pablo Espinal, the chief of staff at the Ministry of Tourism, announced plans to install cameras in public hotel areas, which will be linked to the country’s 911 emergency system. Hotel security systems will also undergo inspections in the near future.
Moreover, in terms of food and beverage safety—including alcohol—Espinal highlighted the retraining and certification of inspectors under international standards, with initial training already completed.
Monitoring and Emergency Information Initiatives
The Department of Tourism Services and Companies plans to keep a close eye on hotel medical offices and aquatic facilities to enhance safety protocols. Emergency information will be visibly posted in each hotel room, and staff will be required to review this information with guests upon check-in.
Additionally, a multilingual emergency center will be established in Punta Cana to assist tourists, thus streamlining communication between visitors, their families, and government officials.
Positive Outlook from Officials
Robin S. Bernstein, the U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, stated that due to these newly implemented measures following what she described as a tourism “crisis,” she believes the Dominican Republic is now safer than ever. She dismissed any fears as part of an unfounded negative campaign and assured potential visitors, “My children come here, my friends come here. I think it is one of the safest places, tourist destinations that I have ever visited.”
