Toyota Rejoins Formula 1 with Strategic Alliance with Haas

  • Toyota is officially back in Formula 1 after a 15-year absence, thanks to a new technical agreement signed with Haas.
  • As part of the multi-year agreement, Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (TGR) motorsports division will “share expertise and knowledge, as well as resources.”
  • The deal marks Toyota’s first time in the sport since it departed in 2009 after eight seasons as a works team and engine supplier.

Toyota and Haas F1 Team have forged a significant partnership, wherein Toyota’s motorsports division will act as the team’s official technical sponsor. This partnership is effective immediately, with branding from Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) set to debut at the upcoming United States Grand Prix.

Under this multi-year agreement, TGR will deliver essential design, technical, and manufacturing services to Haas, providing a much-needed influx of resources for Haas, currently the smallest team in F1. In this mutually beneficial arrangement, Haas will leverage its technical expertise while TGR will contribute vital knowledge and resources.

Notably, despite this new collaboration, Haas will continue its relationship as a Ferrari customer team, maintaining its existing supply chain for parts from the Italian manufacturer.

This new agreement signifies Toyota’s return to competitive motorsport after discontinuing its own works team 15 years ago. During its tenure, Toyota’s F1 team achieved 13 podium finishes and ranked a commendable fourth in the constructors’ championship before ceasing operations in 2009. Presently, TGR competes across various global motorsport events, including the FIA World Rally Championship and the Dakar Rally.

While this collaboration does not involve Toyota returning as an engine supplier, Tomoya Takahashi, the president of Gazoo Racing Company, expressed optimism about the future of this partnership. “By competing alongside MoneyGram Haas F1 Team at the pinnacle of motorsports, we aim to cultivate drivers, engineers, and mechanics,” Takahashi remarked.
