Trekking the Trans Bhutan Trail with iBestTravel
Historically a pilgrimage route, the fully-restored Trans Bhutan Trail reopened to visitors in September 2022. Its 250 miles of scenic footpath offer visitors a unique perspective of Bhutan and likely will become one of the world’s most iconic cross-country walks.
To undertake this trek, hiring a guide is essential. Guide Galey Tenzin provides insight into the experiences you might encounter over seven days on the extraordinary Trans Bhutan Trail.
Why You Should Trek the Trans Bhutan Trail
The Trans Bhutan Trail is an ancient route through the Himalayas, connecting trekkers with the footsteps of ancestors. For hundreds of years, the trail was utilized by pilgrims, messengers, armies, and traders. It became the sole means of traversing and communicating throughout the nation until the 1960s when a national highway took its place.
Under the vision of the King of Bhutan, local partners, including the Bhutan Canada Foundation, worked tirelessly to restore this historic route. A national event marked the launch of the restored trail in September 2022, demonstrating national unity with 24 scouts from each district walking its length.
The trail offers exposure to unique cultures, diverse dialects, various religious sites, and an array of flora, fauna, and birds. It is dotted with campsites, farmhouses, hotels, and local specialties. Scenic views and interactions with locals make the journey even more enriching. Each season presents a different hiking experience, although winter nights can become quite chilly.
Please consider your physical fitness before trekking; prior hiking experience is beneficial. A guide is mandatory for all international trekkers.
