40% of Travel Destinations are Relaxing Restrictions

Global Travel Restrictions Eased: What You Need to Know

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), 40% of all destinations worldwide have now eased the restrictions they placed on international tourism in response to the pandemic.

The latest UNWTO Travel Restrictions Report confirms a gradual but steady adaptation and responsible restart of international tourism. Of the 87 destinations that have eased travel restrictions, only four have completely lifted all limits, while 83 have made adjustments while keeping certain measures in place, such as partial border closures. Moreover, 115 destinations, representing 53% of the global total, continue to keep their borders entirely closed to tourists.

The report indicates that destinations with a greater dependence on tourism for employment, economic growth, and development are more inclined to ease travel restrictions. Consequently, around half (41) of the destinations that have eased restrictions are in Europe. Among the 115 destinations still with their borders closed to international tourism, the report shows that a significant majority (88) have been closed for over 12 weeks.

“The restart of tourism can be undertaken responsibly and in a way that safeguards public health while also supporting businesses and livelihoods,” states UNWTO secretary-general, Zurab Pololikashvili. “As destinations continue to ease travel restrictions, international cooperation is crucial. This way, global tourism can gain public trust and confidence—essential foundations as we adapt to the new reality.” To read the full UNWTO Travel Restrictions Report, please see here.
