Current Travel Situation Amid Israel-Gaza Conflict
On Saturday, 7 October 2023, violence erupted across Israel and Gaza in one of the most severe conflicts the region has faced in decades. Following the launch of thousands of rockets by Hamas militants and their infiltration into Israeli towns, the conflict escalated quickly, with Israel’s military responding with substantial air strikes. This violence has resulted in a high number of casualties, leaving thousands dead and many more injured on both sides.
International Casualties
At least 30 Americans have lost their lives in this conflict, with reports indicating that more are being held hostage by militants in Gaza. Additionally, the conflict has claimed the lives of six British citizens, with 10 others reported missing. Thailand has confirmed at least 21 of its nationals among the dead, while France has reported at least 12 fatalities among its citizens.
Travel Disruptions for Tourists
As the conflict continues, air travel options available to tourists looking to evacuate Israel have been significantly disrupted. Although Ben Gurion International Airport remains operational, the number of flights has been greatly reduced, complicating travel plans. Many major airlines have either cancelled or suspended flights into Israel, making it increasingly challenging for travelers to return home. A growing number of countries are organizing special evacuation flights for their citizens.
Assistance from Travel Specialists
Travel companies are actively assisting tourists with evacuation efforts. Jonathan Rose, a US travel advisor, noted, “We had a few groups in the country; some we took to the airport, and they managed to secure a flight out. Others were delivered to our partners across the Jordanian border, where we coordinated flights out of Amman.” This highlights the importance of communication and support during such crises.
Latest Updates on Flights
Flight operations related to travel to and from Israel remain highly dynamic, with changes occurring frequently. In the UK, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all but essential travel to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Most of the UK’s major airlines, including British Airways, easyJet, and Virgin Atlantic, have suspended all flights between the UK and Tel Aviv.
- Virgin Atlantic has suspended flights until at least 28 October 2023.
- British Airways flights to Israel are suspended until further notice.
- easyJet flights to Israel are suspended until further notice.
A spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic commented, “The safety of our customers and our teams is our number one priority, always. After careful consideration, based on the latest information, we have decided to pause flying to and from Tel Aviv. As the situation evolves, we will keep our flying program under constant review. Our team will be in contact with any affected customers to discuss their options.”
