Introduction to New Scanners
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is set to implement cutting-edge scanners at airport checkpoints that can identify prohibited items, thereby enhancing security measures and potentially streamlining the screening process for passengers.
Advanced 3D Imaging Technology
The new full-size Computed Tomography (CT) x-ray systems possess the capability to generate 3D images of carry-on baggage. This advanced technology enables TSA officers to pinpoint items such as weapons, explosives, and other restricted materials, as reported by the agency. Importantly, the upgraded machines will allow travelers to retain more items within their carry-on bags during the screening process, which may significantly expedite the overall experience.
The TSA anticipates initiating the rollout of this innovative technology by the summer.
TSA Administrator David Pekoske commented, “These orders are another important step in enhancing aviation security. They provide our dedicated frontline officers with one of the best tools available to screen passenger carry-on items and also improve the passenger experience by allowing passengers to keep more items in their carry-on bags during the screening process.”
Once a 3D image is created, TSA officers will be in a position to “view and rotate the image on three axes to analyze and identify any threat items that may be present in a passenger’s luggage.”
The agency plans to procure up to 469 base systems and 469 full-size systems featuring fully-automated screening lanes and an automated bin return feature, which collectively facilitate higher passenger throughput.
While the introduction of these new machines enables travelers to keep more items in their bags, individuals enrolled in TSA PreCheck already enjoy the advantage of being able to retain liquids and laptops in their bags and are not required to remove their shoes during screening. This program, part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Trusted Traveler Programs, is designed to enhance the overall travel experience.
TSA PreCheck Benefits
Moreover, TSA is expanding its TSA PreCheck initiative, with the recent establishment of its first-ever international location in the Bahamas.
For travelers lacking TSA PreCheck membership, it is advisable to accelerate the screening process by packing wisely, ensuring that items like liquids are readily accessible, and being prepared with all necessary documents prior to boarding.
