Summary
TSA PreCheck Overview
The Department of Homeland Security is encouraging travelers who primarily fly domestically to consider TSA PreCheck instead of Global Entry due to lengthy application wait times, which can extend beyond a year.
“If you do not travel multiple times per year internationally, we recommend applying for the TSA PreCheck Program,” DHS wrote on its website. “Most TSA PreCheck applicants can schedule an appointment in less than 2 weeks and, if approved, can receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN) in about 3 to 5 days after the appointment.”
Global Entry Application Delays
Federal officials have faced challenges in processing Global Entry applications, a program allowing pre-screened travelers to bypass customs lines. This has been exacerbated since the pandemic closure in March 2020, as reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Currently, “application processing delays” for Global Entry and other expedited programs, including SENTRI, NEXUS, and FAST, range from 6 to 18 months, according to DHS.
DHS mentioned that while some Global Entry applications are reviewed quickly, it’s advisable for applicants to check interview appointment availability at their preferred Enrollment Center prior to applying.
Enrollment on Arrival Program
Alternatively, those who have been conditionally approved can utilize the agency’s Enrollment on Arrival program, allowing international passengers to complete their interview upon arrival at participating airports, which significantly expedites the process.
Popularity of Trusted Traveler Programs
The Global Entry program has gained significant traction. As of March, over 10 million individuals had enrolled in one of CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs, with nearly 8 million choosing Global Entry. Moreover, TSA PreCheck, which is included with Global Entry, offers an expedited airport security process featuring a dedicated security line, enabling travelers to keep shoes and laptops in their bags.
“Global Entry provides numerous benefits for its members, making it a valuable option for frequent international travelers,” stated Michael Millich, the director of CBP Trusted Traveler Programs, earlier this year. “We have seen high demand for TTP enrollment, particularly over the recent months, and we are exploring various solutions to tackle this issue efficiently.”
