Traveling to Dubai: Essential Information
Travel to Dubai was off-limits for most of 2021. However, in early August, the destination was finally opened up to UK residents. Here’s what you need to know about heading there, and back to the UK.
What are Dubai’s travel restrictions?
Dubai is open to travellers from the UK. Those who are fully vaccinated, under 12 years old, or have severe disabilities do not need to show proof of a negative Covid test before entry. Travellers with a Covid-19 recovery certificate with a QR code dated within 30 days of departure are also exempt from testing requirements.
Moreover, individuals who are not fully vaccinated must take a PCR test prior to arrival. The RT-PCR test certificate must be in printed or digital format in English or Arabic; SMS certificates are not valid. The certificate should include a QR code and indicate that the test was administered in an authorized facility. Certificates in other languages must be validated, and those previously used for other journeys are not permitted.
Moreover, fully vaccinated travellers may be randomly selected to take a Covid-19 PCR test upon arrival. They will need to isolate pending the results of the test. When we visited in January 2022, we were required to take a PCR test upon arrival at Dubai Airport and were able to proceed to our hotel, later receiving a text confirming our negative results.
Visitors to Dubai must have valid international health insurance before travelling. Additionally, they will need to register their details on the Covid-19 DXB Smart App.
While travelling from the UK to Abu Dhabi, both fully vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals must have a PCR test upon arrival. However, quarantine is not required. It’s crucial to verify entry requirements for Abu Dhabi and the other emirates in the United Arab Emirates directly on the official UAE government website before your travel.
Do I need a Covid vaccine to travel to Dubai?
No, a Covid vaccine is not mandatory to travel to Dubai. However, a PCR test is required if you are not fully vaccinated, except for children under 12, those with severe disabilities, and individuals possessing a recovery certificate with a QR code dated within 30 days of departure.
Do tourists have to quarantine in Dubai?
Depending on your country of origin, travellers may need to take a PCR test upon arrival in Dubai. Furthermore, you may also be selected for random PCR testing at the airport. If asked to take a PCR test, you might need to quarantine until the results are confirmed. If the result is positive, isolation for 10 days is mandatory, typically at a private residence or a hotel, hospital, or government facility depending on your symptoms and accommodation arrangements.
What are the rules for Brits returning to the UK from Dubai?
As of 4 am on Friday 18 March 2022, all travel rules in the UK have been lifted. Consequently, no travellers need to test, quarantine, or complete a passenger locator form, regardless of vaccination status.
Will travel to Dubai be restricted again?
It is challenging to predict future travel restrictions as the Covid pandemic persists globally. For now, if you’re planning a trip, it is advisable to regularly check the government website for updates. Furthermore, consider opting for a flexible flight and travel policy, as well as travel insurance with Covid cover for additional security.
