UK Passport Processing Time: How Long to Get Your Passport?

Applying for a passport has become a priority for many as we begin to travel again post-pandemic. However, the influx of applications has resulted in a backlog of appointments, causing many to wait weeks for their new passport in spring 2022. Moreover, changes in EU rules mean travelers need to be especially cautious when leaving the UK, ensuring they have sufficient validity on their passports to complete their trips.

Here’s what you need to know about passport processing times and how to handle last-minute applications.

How long does it take to get a passport?

The usual turnaround time for a passport is approximately five weeks. However, according to the government website, you should allow up to 10 weeks to receive your passport if you’re applying from the UK. Those applying from outside the UK may experience different wait times.

Individuals applying in the spring and summer of 2023 may face longer wait times as over 1,000 UK Passport Office workers are scheduled to strike between Monday 3 April and Friday 5 May.

What is the current wait time for a UK passport?

While you should generally expect to receive your new passport within 10 weeks of applying, there have been reports of longer waiting times in early 2022. According to the Home Office, this situation arose because many individuals did not check their passports during the pandemic, leading to five million expired passports. Consequently, last-minute applications are now contributing to the backlog.

It’s unclear how long these delays will persist, but the best advice is to review your passport status. If you are nearing your renewal date, it’s advisable to submit your application as soon as possible.

How long does a fast track take for a passport?

The government offers a fast-track service, which is designed to provide your new passport within a week. This service costs £142 for an adult passport (or £152 for a 50-page frequent traveler passport) and £122 for a child passport (or £132 for a 50-page frequent traveler passport). It is important to note that this service can only be used for renewing a passport, changing personal details, or replacing a stolen or lost passport, as well as obtaining a first child passport.

However, due to the existing backlog, you may still encounter longer wait times even when opting for expedited service. Individuals attempting to renew their passports in recent weeks have faced challenges in booking appointments, so it is wise to allow additional time whenever possible.

What are the new passport rules?

Since leaving the EU in January 2020, travelers with a UK passport must ensure their passport is less than 10 years old on the day of entry when visiting any European Union country (except Ireland), as well as Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, or Vatican City. Furthermore, passports must be valid for at least three months after the planned end date of the trip.

For instance, if you plan to travel in summer 2022 and are scheduled to return to the UK on 31 July, ensure that your passport remains valid until at least 31 October 2022.
