Travel Guide: One Week in Guatemala
From ancient Mayan ruins to colorful colonial towns and stunning natural beauty, Guatemala offers something for every type of tourist. Here’s how to spend a week in this Central American gem, starting in charming Antigua and concluding at Tikal National Park.
Antigua: Three Nights
Day One: To maximize your time, aim for an early morning flight landing in Guatemala City. Arrange transportation to Antigua beforehand so that you can swiftly check into your hotel. This allows for ample time to start exploring the city by noon.
Once settled, grab a map, don comfortable shoes, and set out on foot. A plethora of restaurants awaits your discovery throughout this quaint city. Enjoy lunch at one that piques your interest and continue exploring Antigua; immerse yourself in artisan markets, visit jade shops, and wander through church ruins and museums. Most importantly, take a break to savor a cup of local coffee in one of the city’s inviting parks.
Day Two: After familiarizing yourself with Antigua, venture outdoors for some nearby adventures. Options include a canopy tour, a visit to Central America’s only winery, an immersive coffee tour, or golfing at La Reunion.
Day Three: Embark on a tour to the active Pacaya Volcano. Witness stunning landscapes as you walk amidst lava flows. Be sure to rest up, as Day Four promises exhilarating activities ahead.
Atitlan: Two Nights
Day Four: Prepare for an early pickup en route to Atitlan, incorporating a couple of enriching detours. First, explore Iximche, an archaeological site steeped in history. Once a thriving Mayan city, it was destroyed by Spanish forces before becoming Central America’s first capital.
Next, enjoy a hearty traditional meal in Tecpan. Your next stop is the lively town of Chichicastenango, home to the largest market in Guatemala, bustling with local produce, crafts, and vibrant culture. Afterward, continue on to Atitlan, where if time permits, you can dive into the local nightlife.
Day Five: Start your day early at the docks for a safe morning boat tour on the lake. The afternoon winds can make boating treacherous, so explore surrounding towns and consider a kayaking adventure or a cliff hike for a thrilling experience. Once again, rest well for the night.
Tikal: One Night
Day Six: Schedule an early journey to Guatemala City, followed by a brief flight to Peten. Your destination is Tikal National Park, one of the largest Mayan archaeological sites discovered to date. As you stroll along its trails, you will encounter magnificent ancient temples and diverse wildlife. Allocate ample time to enjoy the full experience.
Don’t forget that the weather can be hot and humid, so pack sunscreen, bug repellent, and plenty of water. After your day of exploration, unwind at your hotel in Flores.
Day Seven: Dedicate your final morning to discovering the charming town of Flores. Take a refreshing swim in the lake and indulge in lunch at a local eatery before making your way to the airport. As an international airport, Flores allows for a convenient departure from Guatemala, avoiding the need to return to Guatemala City.
