History
Ghirardelli Square is a beloved San Francisco landmark and an essential part of visiting Fisherman’s Wharf, the city’s prominent waterfront tourist hub. Originally a chocolate factory, this three-story structure now houses a variety of unique shops and eateries, including an outpost of the iconic Ghirardelli Chocolate Company.
Founded by Italian immigrant Domenico Ghirardelli in the mid-19th century, he arrived in San Francisco with 600 pounds of chocolate from South America. Initially, Ghirardelli sold sweets to miners craving home comforts and went on to become San Francisco’s “most successful chocolatier.”
The Broma process for chocolate production was discovered at this factory, enhancing the quality of Ghirardelli’s products. Although Ghirardelli passed away in 1894, his factory remained operational until the 1960s when it moved operations. The historic structures were repurposed into a retail and restaurant complex, making it a pioneering adaptive reuse project.
