The Tyee Ski Club was formed in 1929, making it one of the oldest ski clubs in Canada. In 1949, the world’s first double chairlift opened, replacing the two to three-hour hike up the mountain.

In 1966, the Skyride opened alongside a brand new mountain station, which became home to two restaurants, gift shops, and other facilities. Since 1990, more than $25 million has gone into adding facilities and events to Grouse Mountain, transforming it into a year-round attraction.

Winter Attractions at Grouse Mountain

The winter season at Grouse Mountain is packed with activities. As the closest ski resort to downtown Vancouver, it features 33 ski and snowboard runs and four lifts. While Grouse cannot compete with Whistler, it offers comparable experiences to Cypress Mountain, accommodating intermediate, advanced, and beginner skiers.

Additionally, winter outdoor activities at Grouse Mountain include snowshoe trails, the kid-friendly Sliding Zone, an outdoor, illuminated Light Walk, sleigh rides, and the annual Peak of Christmas winter holiday celebration that includes visits from Santa.

When conditions are favorable, Grouse Mountain features one of the most famous hiking trails in Vancouver: the Grouse Grind. The 2.9 km trail up the face of Grouse Mountain is challenging—the steep uphill climb is recommended for intermediate and expert hikers only. Admission is $15, which includes the gondola ride back down (downhill travel on foot is not permitted due to the steepness of the trail). It’s important to wear suitable footwear and layers, as the weather can change rapidly and the ground can be uneven. The trail starts at the parking area near the Skyride and comprises mainly steps and step-like inclines; it’s aptly referred to as “Mother Nature’s StairMaster” and should only be attempted by those with good fitness levels.

How to Visit Grouse Mountain

Grouse Mountain is situated at 6400 Nancy Greene Way in North Vancouver. Parking is available for drivers, or visitors might choose to utilize public transit. During the summer, a General Admission ticket allows access to the Grouse Mountain shuttle, which picks up at Canada Place in downtown Vancouver.
