Connection to Estonia

I live in a 110-year-old house built by my great-grandparents in the Pelgulinn neighbourhood, located in north Tallinn. Since moving in 2009, the area has undergone significant gentrification. The local art scene is small; therefore, I turned my home into a house museum to broaden its scope. This initiative also serves as my way of integrating with the city. Additionally, my country home situated in the serene Estonian forest has educated me on the beauty of living offline.

One Day in Tallinn

If you have only 24 hours in Tallinn, consider visiting the following neighborhoods:

  • Take the tram to Kopli to enjoy a stroll along Paljassaare’s Pikakari beach.
  • Visit Linnahall, the abandoned Soviet-era concert hall.
  • Conclude your day at Kolm Lövi (Three Lions) bar in the Telliskivi area.
  • In the Lasnamäe neighbourhood, explore the Kumu Art Museum.
  • Don’t miss Väike-Öismäe, a district characterized by its uniform architecture, reminiscent of other former Soviet countries.

Art Scene in Tallinn

Tallinn boasts numerous contemporary art institutions worth exploring. Some standout locations are:

  • The Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia
  • Kai Art Centre
  • Temnikova & Kasela Gallery

Favorite Spots in Estonia

For me, Estonia’s bogs represent our hidden treasures, particularly Mukri bog, which lies on the route to my country home. This tranquil place is typically empty, allowing for a peaceful swim in its inky waters. Estonia also features old quarries, now filled with water and resembling miniature paradises. While some, like Rummu and Männiku, are more popular, others, such as my favorite, Maardu, have hidden entrances waiting to be explored.

Latest Discoveries in Estonia

This summer, I stumbled upon Kiipsaare Lighthouse on Saaremaa island. Set in the sea, this lighthouse creates unique swimming opportunities. The nearby Harilaiu hiking trail offers beautiful views, and we enjoyed camping on a deserted sandy beach. The feeling of seclusion is what makes traveling through Estonia extraordinarily special.
