Singer Priya Ragu on the Zurich Music Scene

Tamil-Swiss singer-songwriter Priya Ragu’s experimental sound – dubbed Raguwavy – blends MIA’s dance beats, SZA’s versatile vocals, and melodic Kollywood influences. However, it is her distinctive fusion of electronic, R&B, and slow jams, pioneered by her brother Japhna Gold, that has led to her collaboration with the London-based band Jungle on their new album. Raised by Sri Lankan parents in St. Gallen and residing in Zurich for a decade, she penned her first album in New York in 2019, challenging herself to create ten songs in six months. A year later, she signed with Warner Records and is set to tour Europe this autumn with her debut single, ‘Good Love 2.0.’

The music scene in Zurich is compact yet expanding significantly. My friend hosts jam sessions and open-mic nights at Plaza Club, which is a fantastic venue for discovering emerging electro and urban artists. Moreover, the rise of Swiss-German rap has been noteworthy. Although the presence of four languages can be challenging for Swiss musicians, the talent pool here is remarkable.

Where Would You Take Us in Zurich?

La Stanza is my go-to spot for the best coffee, complemented by an excellent playlist, which is both essential and rare. For those visiting for the first time, I recommend District 1 for the Swiss National Museum and an array of traditional restaurants. However, as night falls, we’d head to Longstreet Bar on Langstrasse in District 4 for a refreshing gin and tonic and live DJ sets. We could later make our way to Moods for an exciting football party, ensuring a well-rounded experience of Zurich’s nightlife.

Do You Have Any Weekend Suggestions?

On Saturdays, I suggest visiting the flea market in Helvetiaplatz, where treasures, like my find of a Best of Stevie Wonder record, await. Each stall offers something unique. When I move into my own place, purchasing a record player will be my first priority. Additionally, I’m thrilled to announce that my new album will soon be available on vinyl!

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

March is particularly vibrant, with the M4 music festival taking place at Schiffbau, providing a platform for new artists to enter demo competitions and win prizes. Summer is equally delightful, especially at Bäckeranlage park, an idyllic location to enjoy a picnic with friends.

Favorite Weekend Getaways

Locarno offers the sensation of being in another country, as it’s located in the Italian region of Switzerland. Here, you can indulge in delectable food, make beautiful walks around the scenic lake, and enjoy the tranquility of nature. Recently, I took my father to Hoher Kasten mountain, where a revolving restaurant boasts magical views over the Appenzell District, resulting in a memorable experience for him.

Where Do You Find Inspiration?

I often wander through Allmend park for inspiration. In fact, during a significant moment last year, while out walking my dog, I encountered a huge black feather, which I learned symbolizes being on the right path, serving as a reminder to remain open to signs from the universe.
