Ultimate Maui Zipline Adventures

As ecotourism and green tourism continue to flourish, ziplining has emerged as a popular and eco-friendly activity worldwide. Originating in Costa Rica during the early 1990s, the concept of “canopy tours” quickly gained traction, leading to adventurous explorations through lush rainforests.

Maui is now home to several zipline companies, including Skyline Eco-Adventures, which was the first on the island and indeed the United States, Kapalua Adventures, and the more recent Piiholo Ranch Zipline. Each of these companies emphasizes safety and provides comprehensive instruction on equipment usage by experienced guides.

Interestingly, companies have not settled on a consistent spelling for their business—zipline, zip-line, or zip line, regardless, they promise an exhilarating time!

Established in 2002, Skyline Eco-Adventures pioneered ziplining in Maui, beginning with their Haleakala Skyline Tour. This thrilling course combines a short hiking experience with five zipline crossings of varying lengths and heights, an “Indiana Jones” swinging bridge, and an opportunity to learn about Hawaii’s unique flora and fauna.

Rated as Hawaii’s Eco-Tour Operator of the Year in 2004, this tour captivates participants not just with thrills but also education about Upcountry Maui’s ecosystem. It runs nine times daily and typically lasts a couple of hours. The price is approximately $89, with possible discounts for online arrangements.

2. Skyline Eco-Adventures – Ka’anapali Skyline Adventure

The Ka’anapali Skyline Adventure is a more adventurous offering, situated high in the mountains above Ka’anapali. Accessible only by off-road vehicles, this half-day experience features eight ziplines and a delightful meal at a breathtaking 1000-foot overlook with sweeping views of the coast.

This adventure operates eight times daily, and guests must meet certain age and weight requirements. Given its unique nature, advanced reservations are recommended.

3. Kapalua Adventures Mountain Outpost Zip Line

The Kapalua Adventures zipline course is notable for its massive length, featuring nearly two miles of parallel lines among the stunning West Maui mountains. Offering various eco-adventure packages, guests can enjoy an array of activities, including a challenge course and climbing tower.

Guests are transported using biodiesel-fueled vehicles, promoting eco-friendliness. The system offers a unique breaking mechanism and harness designs that enhance comfort and safety compared to other ziplines.

However, it’s notable that Kapalua Adventures ceased operations in early 2013. Current operational status may change, so it’s worth checking for updates.

Launched in late 2008, the Piiholo Ranch Zipline operates in the scenic surroundings of an 800-acre ranch above Makawao, offering an extensive zipline experience. Guests can traverse some of the longest and ecologically sensitive zipline trails in the country, featuring breathtaking views and a comprehensive adventure course.

Participants engage in a unique experience with knowledgeable guides while enjoying four lines of ziplines side by side, providing opportunities for competitive fun. Safety and comfort are prioritized with top-notch gear provided to all participants.

Ziplining at Piiholo Ranch is a fulfilling experience, offering various tours to suit different thrill-seeking preferences. Reservations can be made by calling their office for more detailed information.
