Located on the southeast edge of the Florida peninsula, the cozy coastal town of Naples is a wonderful choice for your next weekend escape, romantic getaway, or family trip. This picturesque destination offers plenty of water sports, fine dining, and upscale shopping, though its pristine beaches alone are enough for a relaxing vacation. Moreover, the super friendly locals are more than willing to reveal their insider tips about the Paradise Coast.

Despite being home to some of the wealthiest individuals in the US, the cost of living in Naples is still more affordable than other popular Florida cities like Miami or Palm Beach. Consequently, visitors can enjoy the ambiance without breaking the bank. As a Black woman, I feel very safe and welcomed by the locals here, which adds to the overall appeal of Naples.

When should I go to Naples?

The ideal time to visit Naples is between March and May. This period is notably peaceful as Naples has yet to fully embrace the spring break crowd. The weather is at its most pleasant, and accommodations are reasonably priced.

However, from June to September, Naples experiences high temperatures and significant rainfall, with average temperatures exceeding 90°F (32°C) and sometimes reaching over 100°F (38°C). If you choose to visit during this time, ensure you pack an umbrella, as hurricane season runs from July through October. On the brighter side, you can find some fantastic deals during the summer months.

Winter in Naples is mild, making it an attractive escape from colder climates, with average temperatures around the mid-70s Fahrenheit (approximately 24°C). This season is also ideal for birdwatching and wildlife spotting.

How much time should I spend in Naples?

Naples serves as the perfect destination for a three-day weekend getaway. This makes it an excellent choice for a solo adventure or a romantic retreat, offering opportunities to experience the white sandy beaches and exquisite culinary offerings. If you extend your stay, you can also plan exciting day trips to nearby destinations like Fort Myers.

How do I get to Naples?

While Naples has its own airport primarily catering to private jets, most travelers will want to fly into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), located in Fort Myers, about a 35-minute drive from Old Naples. The average cost of a rideshare can be around $50, depending on various factors such as the time of day.

Is it easy to get around Naples?

One of the great features of Naples is that it is very walkable, especially in the lively 5th Ave South area. For those looking to rent a car, the city is easily navigable, with ample parking options available. From my experience, rideshares are the most convenient mode of transportation, particularly for short weekend trips. Typically, Uber waits average just three to five minutes, with fares ranging from approximately $7 to $16 per ride.

Top things to do in Naples

Explore the picturesque beaches

Southwest Florida’s beaches certainly live up to the hype, showcasing plenty of stunning white-sand stretches. One personal favorite in Naples is Clam Pass Park, which is free to access (with a small parking fee) and open daily from 8 am until sunset. To reach the beach, you need to stroll down a three-quarter-mile wooden boardwalk, which can be traversed easily via the complimentary tram service. The 35-acre beach is teeming with marine life and coastal birds, making it an enjoyable spot for nature lovers and families alike.

Despite the slightly high-priced beach chairs and umbrellas, this family-friendly beach features calm blue waters and some of the most beautiful seashells along the shore. Facilities include a snack bar, restrooms, bike racks, and foot showers. However, remember to bring your own towels, as there are no rentals available for the general public; these are reserved for guests at beachfront resorts.

Other popular beaches to explore include Vanderbilt Beach, Tigertail Beach, and Marco Island Beach. If you’re traveling with a dog, check out Bonita Beach Dog Park, Gulfside City Park Beach, and Lighthouse Beach Park. You can also enjoy various water-based activities at local beaches, including parasailing, jet skiing, and dolphin spotting.

My favorite thing to do in Naples

As a coffee enthusiast, visiting local cafes is a special treat when I travel. The ambiance and environment always make me feel at home. During my most recent visit to Naples, EJ’s Bayfront Cafe provided a simple yet delightful dining experience.

While there may be a short wait to get in, the menu is a brunch lover’s paradise, famous for having some of the best comfort food. Conveniently situated just steps from the ocean, the cafe offers ample outdoor seating. A fan-favorite dish is the banana-stuffed French toast platter made with thick-cut challah bread, stuffed with sliced bananas and rolled in cinnamon and sugar. You can expect quick service and delicious food, making it a must-visit.
