Experience the Vibrant Notting Hill Carnival
Since 1966, the Notting Hill Carnival has celebrated Caribbean culture through food, music, and costumes. This iconic West London event was postponed for two years during the pandemic, but in 2022, it returned better than ever. Therefore, if you’re considering attending this massive multi-day party, here’s what you need to know.
Early Memories and Community Spirit
Carnival Village Trust CEO Matthew Philip recalls his earliest memories of the weekend back to the 1980s. “My dad, Clyde Phillip, was a co-founder of the Mangrove Steel Band, formed in 1978. I took over managing the band at 21, and I have been involved with the carnival ever since, eventually becoming CEO in 2018. While it’s a mega event, it’s really a patchwork of hundreds of mini-events, each adding to the overall experience.”
When is Notting Hill Carnival?
In 2023, the Notting Hill Carnival will take place from Sunday, August 27, to Monday, August 28. Traditionally, Sunday is family day, making it the best time to visit with children, while Monday features the biggest parties and the most energetic atmosphere. “There’s always a hunger for Notting Hill Carnival,” Matthew shares. “Moreover, the excitement has surged since the pandemic, highlighting our inherent need for social connection.”
Fiona Compton, a London-based artist and Carnival ambassador, adds, “The lead-up to the Carnival is just as wonderful as the event itself. The Carnival community spends months planning and preparing. On Carnival morning, we gather early, singing and eating breakfast together—it feels ritualistic. The joy in the air is infectious, and seeing friends we haven’t seen in a year feels like a family reunion.”
Where is Notting Hill Carnival?
The main parade winds through Westbourne and Ladbroke Grove, with many surrounding roads closed to traffic. To navigate the event effectively, consider downloading the Notting Hill Carnival app. “It’s a useful tool to find transport hubs and discover exciting food options or the best sound systems,” Matthew suggests.
