Road Tripping in Switzerland: A Guide by iBestTravel
iBestTravel’s Aoife Breslin recently spent a week road-tripping through Switzerland. Here, she shares essential tips and insights for exploring the country by campervan.
Embrace the Freedom of Van Life
Initially, I was skeptical about the popular ‘van life’ trend, but the freedom offered by having a home on wheels exceeded my expectations. This lifestyle provided unparalleled flexibility, allowing me to adjust itinerary choices on the go. Whether we pulled over at scenic lakes for an impromptu swim or discovered charming villages otherwise overlooked, the adventure was memorable and fulfilling.
Where to Stay and the Vibe
Switzerland is renowned for its stunning landscapes but is often perceived as expensive. The solution? Renting a campervan! By merging accommodation and transport, we enjoyed an unforgettable experience while keeping costs manageable.
Our campervan, the Family Finca, comfortably accommodated three travelers. Its responsive service was a significant advantage—especially when a tire puncture occurred, and we were back on the road within an hour.
Planning Your Route Through Switzerland
Our journey commenced after landing in Zurich with a breakfast stop at a local bakery. From there, we traversed to Lucerne, where the medieval architecture captivated us. Next, we headed to Interlaken, indulging in local gelato and chocolate while falling in love with the quaint charm of Brienz.
Grindelwald became a highlight, especially with views from the First Cliff Walk and connections to a familiar face from my hometown. The picturesque scenery prompted spontaneous moments of joy, further cementing this trip as unforgettable.
Scenic Experiences in Switzerland
A standout moment was our day at Lake Oeschinensee, a breathtaking alpine lake surrounded by majestic mountains. The beauty here felt like stepping into a postcard—perfect blue waters reflecting striking peaks.
We began our day with a gondola ride followed by a scenic hike, leading us to the captivating lake. The day was filled with swimming, sunbathing, and indulging in nature’s tranquility, making it a hallmark of our adventure.
Noteworthy Activities: Jungfraujoch
Visiting Jungfraujoch, often hailed as “The Top of Europe,” was an extraordinary experience. The journey involves a thrilling gondola ride and scenic train travel through mountains, revealing awe-inspiring glaciers and striking landscapes upon arrival.
This destination offers a myriad of attractions, including the Ice Palace and Sphinx Observatory. It’s a must-visit for anyone traveling through Switzerland, and I recommend arriving early to beat the crowds.
Essential Gear for Adventure
Since Switzerland is a haven for outdoor lovers, wearing appropriate clothing was crucial. Despite much warmth and sunshine, layering was key to adapting to the changing environment. A solid pair of walking shoes is indispensable—whether hiking or exploring city’s picturesque streets.
Final Tips for Planning Your Swiss Expedition
While planning your road trip, consider driving durations to enhance the experience. Keeping travel segments under two hours maximized our exploration time. Our itinerary included Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Grindelwald, and Bern, emphasizing variety and discovery.
