Top Adventures Around the World
Since starting my blog ActivePlanet in 2011, I’ve not only gained knowledge from personal experience but from extensive research. Spending a considerable 8 months backpacking around Southeast Asia to exploring my home country of North America, I’ve discovered an abundance of experiences that life has to offer.
The best way to maximize these experiences is through unique and thrilling adventures.
1. Shark Diving in the Caribbean
Out of all the exhilarating places to go shark diving globally, the Caribbean should undoubtedly be at the top of your list. It’s a premier destination for diving with Great Hammerhead Sharks, and migrate whale sharks visit every year.
Moreover, the opportunity to dive with various species in one of the most stunning chains of tropical islands provides a compelling reason to jump in the water!
2. Sandboarding Nicaraguan Volcanoes
Sandboarding is a popular activity; however, few consider the thrill of sliding down an active volcano. In Nicaragua, you can have this extraordinary experience.
While the journey can be physically demanding—after all, no one will carry you up the sand dune—travelers can explore the summit of Cerro Negro volcano and then sandboard down its steep slopes to the base. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but the rush is worthwhile.
3. Island Hopping in the South Pacific
The South Pacific is splashed with lagoons in hues of blue that resemble an artist’s palette, offering countless opportunities for true adventurers.
Take your time to explore the islands of Tahiti, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Mauritius, Seychelles, and the Maldives. Gather a group of friends and spend at least 4-6 months on this journey. Although you might need to take leave from work, the experience will be priceless.
4. Cruising Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands
If you have the time and resources, then an adventure cruise through Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands should certainly be on your bucket list.
This ultimate polar expedition takes you to some of the most isolated wilderness areas on Earth. You will witness the stunning beauty of Antarctica and encounter diverse wildlife in their natural habitats, including king penguin colonies and elephant seals.
5. Hike Machu Picchu & the Sacred Valley
The trek to Machu Picchu is regarded as a rite of passage for many travelers around the world and is an experience you shouldn’t miss during your global adventures.
While the classic route is popular, I recommend the longer trek from Vilcabamba to Machu Picchu. This 5-day overnight journey takes you from Vilcabamba, climbing through Asuntina Pass, descending into the village of Yanatile, and eventually reaching Machu Picchu. For those seeking a less crowded experience, this lesser-known path is the way to go!
6. Iceland – The Land of Fire & Ice
If you are at a turning point in your life and require an adventure that will leave a lasting impression, look no further than the Land of Fire & Ice.
Iceland remains one of the last unexplored destinations, featuring majestic landscapes infused with a magical beauty that captivates any traveler. With its breathtaking views, active volcanoes, glaciers, and charming coastal villages, you’ll quickly see why this place is so enchanting. Plus, don’t miss the spectacular Aurora Borealis light show!
7. Magic of an African Safari
It’s well-known that Africa boasts some of the best safari destinations worldwide, including South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Uganda. This region allows you to witness the coveted “Big 5,” making it a remarkable trip.
However, the soul-stirring aspect of this experience lies in seeing these magnificent creatures in the wild, particularly as many are now threatened by poaching.
8. Trek Off the Beaten Path in Southeast Asia
If you’ve ever been backpacking in Southeast Asia, you will quickly learn why it is a favorite destination among travelers.
During my 8-month exploration of this region, I sought those hidden gems that few travelers ever discover. While it can be challenging to find these off-the-beaten-path spots in such a popular area, heading to some villages in Northern Laos might present lucky opportunities. Just remember to think outside the box and venture farther than you might expect!
Which of these extraordinary adventures would you choose to embark upon around the world?
