Unforgettable Weekend in Tampa, Florida
Although Florida destinations like Miami and Palm Beach receive their fair share of the spotlight, it’s important not to overlook Tampa on the Gulf Coast. This expanding mid-sized city radiates a polished charm, making it an effortless and inviting vacation spot.
Having grown up in Tampa, the city’s fresh vibes and grounded atmosphere continually draw me back. The sunny days, vibrant culture, and friendly locals create an irresistible allure. There’s always a new hotspot to discover or a beloved classic to revisit. Therefore, I’ve crafted a three-day itinerary that highlights the best things to do in Tampa, blending cherished favorites and new attractions seamlessly.
The Basics of Your Tampa Trip
When to Arrive: If possible, plan to arrive on Thursday evening to make the most of a full three-day weekend. If work commitments hinder your escape, working by the water can certainly lighten that Friday workload.
Airport Transfers: Utilize a rideshare service from Tampa International Airport (TPA), a remarkably efficient airport. Depending on the time of day, fares typically range from $30 to $50 to reach your destination.
Getting Around Tampa: Certain areas are more walkable, and locals enjoy exploring on foot. If you visit during the Gasparilla festivities in late January, expect to grab your 30,000 steps! If you prefer not to rent a car, consider accommodations near the Riverwalk, Water Street, or Hyde Park for convenient access to attractions. Rideshares, bike rentals, and scooters are readily available, and you may even opt for the trolley.
Where to Stay: Tampa’s hotels tend to offer an upscale vibe with a chic aesthetic rather than a boutique feel. Travelers looking for luxury might consider the Tampa EDITION, while mid-range options include Aloft Tampa Downtown and the Epicurean Hotel in Hyde Park. Budget-conscious visitors often find great deals through Airbnb in central neighborhoods.
Best Time to Visit: While Tampa is a year-round destination, winter is ideal for those escaping colder climates. Avoid January if large crowds from Gasparilla aren’t your preference. Summer can be quite hot, but visiting before hurricane season from June to November allows you to enjoy poolside drinks in the heat, often accompanied by refreshing air-conditioning.
What to Pack: Given the warm and humid climate, opt for lightweight fabrics, balanced with a light jacket for cooler evenings or time near the water. Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen, essential for sun-filled days in the Sunshine State.
Your Friday in Tampa
Morning: Kickstart your day with a stroll along Bayshore Boulevard, known as the longest continuous pedestrian walkway in the world. As you reach Rome Avenue, don’t miss Hyde Park Village for a delightful coffee at Buddy Brew Coffee or a hearty breakfast at Goody Goody Burgers.
What to Do During the Day: Spend your day exploring Hyde Park or visiting the Riverwalk. Consider ordering sandwiches for pickup from Wright’s Gourmet House for a delicious lunch. Afterward, head to the nearby waterfront, whether it’s Tampa Bay or a drive to the beaches of St. Petersburg or Sarasota, both approximately 30 minutes to an hour away. Charming local beach spots, including Anna Maria Island and Indian Rocks Beach, offer stunning coastal experiences.
If your accommodation lacks an outdoor pool, consider grabbing a day pass at a nearby resort or rent a small boat to explore the scenic Davis Islands.
Dinner: Savor a unique dining experience at Ulele, known for its Floridian fusion dishes. The gator tail, while adventurous, is surprisingly comparable to chicken. Enjoy walking along the Riverwalk with your cocktail, and if you have a group with diverse tastes, consider Armature Works for its wide array of culinary options.
After Dark: Tampa’s nightlife offers something for everyone—whether energetic or laid-back. Visit M.Bird, a rooftop bar featuring mesmerizing views, or venture to South Howard “SoHo” for vibrant nightlife, with popular bars like SoHo Saloon and MacDinton’s Irish Pub.
Your Saturday Adventure
Morning: Start your day with a delectable café con leche. Utilizing a one-day unlimited trolley pass for only $5, journey to Ybor City, a historic neighborhood. Sample quick bites at Blind Tiger Coffee Roasters or dine at Columbia Restaurant, Florida’s oldest eatery.
How to Spend the Day: Embrace the rich history of Ybor City, known as the former cigar capital of the world, where you can explore charming brick buildings that now house eclectic shops, clubs, and bakeries. Consider visiting the Ybor City Museum State Park to learn more about the area’s legacy, open from 10 am to 3 pm. Don’t forget to check out the thrift and antique shops during your visit.
Dinner: Experience elevated dining in the Channel District. Choose from French cuisine at Boulon, a Michelin-starred prix fixe meal at Lilac, or fresh oysters at The Pearl. Even with a rental car, rideshare options are preferable, especially during home games for the Tampa Bay Lightning, when downtown traffic can become congested.
After Dark: Explore Water Street or Bay to Bay Boulevard for an evening filled with culinary delights or revisit the lively SoHo district, where plans can be easily adjusted given Tampa’s navigability.
Your Sunday in Tampa
Morning: Indulge in a lovely brunch at Oxford Exchange, which showcases an independent bookstore alongside a café and restaurant. The ambiance and delicious menu make it a fitting end to your Tampa getaway, allowing you time to pick up a light read for the journey home.
How to Spend Your Day: After brunch, take a leisurely stroll to the University of Tampa, observing lively rowing teams on the Hillsborough River and students enjoying leisure under palm trees. For a final treat, grab some Cuban sandwiches at West Tampa Sandwich Shop on North Armenia before heading to the airport.
While a quick trip to Tampa offers a fulfilling experience, many visitors find themselves extending their stay to discover even more of what this vibrant city has to offer.
