United Airlines’ Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner: The Next Level of Comfort
United began flying its new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner between Los Angeles and Newark this week, with plans to expand service between Newark and San Francisco in February. Aviation enthusiasts will appreciate the introduction of this innovative aircraft in U.S. skies this winter. Importantly, all travelers will enjoy access to United’s top-notch business-class seats on these flights, along with an opportunity to experience United’s new Premium Plus seating.
What is the 787-10 Dreamliner?
United is one of only three airlines awarded the largest type of Dreamliner available thus far, alongside Singapore Airlines and Etihad. Ultimately, United plans to incorporate 14 of these jets into its fleet and stands out as the only airline globally to feature all three variants of the Dreamliner: 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10.
The 787-10 incorporates all the advantageous features of its smaller counterparts, such as enhanced fuel efficiency compared to traditional jets, quieter engines, heightened cabin pressurization, and elevated humidity for improved passenger comfort. Additionally, advanced lighting systems assist travelers in adjusting their circadian rhythms more effectively, and larger windows allow for greater influx of natural light.
Increased Capacity
Measuring 18 feet longer than the 787-9 and 38 feet longer than the 787-8, the 787-10 can accommodate 66 additional passengers compared to the 787-9, and 99 more than the 787-8. While increased capacity is advantageous, it does not compromise passenger comfort.
Cabins and Classes
The United 787-10 features a configuration of 44 seats in business class, 21 seats in Premium Plus, 54 Economy Plus seats, and 199 regular economy seats.
First-Class Comfort: Polaris
In business class, the seating arrangement is staggered 1 – 2 – 1, granting every passenger direct access to the aisle. Each seat measures 20.6 inches in width and converts into a fully flat bed measuring 78 inches in length.
Passengers selecting Polaris for transcontinental travel enjoy Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, which includes a blanket and small pillow. The amenity kits are streamlined, featuring products like Soho House & Co. Cowshed Spa lip balm, ear plugs, toothbrush, toothpaste, and an eye mask. Noise-canceling headphones provide an immersive experience with a 16-inch in-flight entertainment screen.
Thanks to United’s collaboration with the Trotter Project, gourmet meals are crafted by prominent chefs, including Delia Gossett of Spago. On the inaugural flight from Los Angeles, dishes included starter options such as Greek yogurt with granola, along with a main selection of either cheese blintzes or chicken chorizo chili verde.
Discovering Premium Plus
Behind business class lies the Premium Plus section, offering 21 seats arranged in a 2 – 3 – 2 format. Each Premium Plus seat is 19 inches wide and provides 38 inches of pitch along with 6 inches of recline. Ergonomically designed footrests enhance comfort during travel.
Entertainment features 13-inch screens, along with individual USB and power ports. Passengers in Premium Plus and Economy Plus are treated to complimentary meals inspired by coastal cities, complete with hot entrées, desserts, and complimentary beverages.
Features of Economy Class
Economy Plus, located just behind Premium Plus, consists of 54 seats with extra legroom. The seating layout follows a 3 – 3 – 3 configuration, while each seat measures 17.5 inches in width and offers 35 inches of pitch. These seats come equipped with USB ports. Passengers can enjoy a 10-inch entertainment screen.
The entertainment system includes innovative features like split-screen capabilities to monitor flight maps alongside content. Accessibility options integrate support for those with mobility, hearing, or vision challenges.
