Southwest Airlines Introduces Online Upgraded Boarding
Passengers flying Southwest Airlines can now upgrade their seats online ahead of their flight — for a fee. This new feature, announced in spring as part of a comprehensive effort to improve the passenger experience, allows customers to enhance their boarding number through the Southwest website or mobile app during the check-in process. According to the airline, upgraded boarding can only be purchased within 24 hours of a flight’s departure, with sales ending 30 minutes before the flight.
Details on the Boarding Process
The upgraded boarding feature commenced earlier this week, according to a Southwest spokesperson. Previously, customers had to purchase this upgrade at the airport. “We announced our commitment in May to enhance our entire Customer Experience, from shopping and traveling onboard to arrival at the destination,” stated the spokesperson. Consequently, customers are now able to skip lines and secure their upgraded boarding spots online.
Those opting for this upgrade, starting at $30 per segment, will receive a boarding assignment position from A1 to A15. This allows them to be among the first to board the aircraft, having the first choice of seats and overhead bin space.
Moreover, customers across all fare classes—including “Anytime,” “Wanna Get Away,” and the new “Wanna Get Away Plus”—can take advantage of this feature. However, it is already incorporated into Business Select seats.
In addition to the upgraded boarding option, Southwest also provides an “EarlyBird Check-In” service. This feature automatically checks customers in before the standard 24-hour check-in period, ensuring a better boarding slot. Priced starting at $15 per one-way flight, this option is available for purchase up to 36 hours prior to departure.
It’s important to note that Southwest operates without assigned seating; instead, passengers are assigned a boarding group (A, B, or C) and a position (1 through 60 or more) at check-in.
Future Enhancements for Travelers
Beyond moving the upgraded boarding process online, Southwest intends to introduce additional amenities including USB A and USB C power ports at every seat, larger overhead bins, and improved Wi-Fi services.
Currently Available Ticket Sales
As of now, Southwest has announced fall and winter tickets on sale starting as low as $59 each way. This sale requires booking by 11:59 p.m. CT on August 26, and is valid for travel on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from September 6 through February 15, 2023.
