The National Museum of the United States Army
The U.S. Army Museum, officially known as The National Museum of the United States Army, is set to be constructed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. This museum is designed to honor the service and sacrifice of all American Soldiers who have served since the Army’s founding in 1775. As a state-of-the-art facility, it aims to preserve the history of America’s oldest military service while educating visitors about the Army’s pivotal role in the nation’s development. The museum will be located just 16 miles south of Washington, DC. Groundbreaking occurred in September 2016, and the anticipated opening is in 2018.
The main building will encompass approximately 175,000 square feet, strategically situated on 41 acres of land. This location includes a reconfigured portion of the Fort Belvoir Golf Course to maintain 36 holes of golf. Additionally, a memorial garden and park will be integrated to facilitate reenactments, educational programs, and various special events. The architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill has been selected for the museum’s design, while Christopher Chadbourne & Associates will oversee planning and design of the galleries and exhibits. Consequently, the Army Historical Foundation is actively raising funds for the museum’s construction, with a target of $200 million from private donations.
