The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park opened in 1981 next to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center in Pearl Harbor. Located just a short 2-3 minute walk from the memorial, the museum aims to restore and preserve artifacts related to the World War II submarine USS Bowfin (SS-287).
This museum operates under the Pacific Fleet Submarine Memorial Association (PFSMA), a non-profit entity that relies on admission charges for maintenance, as it receives no state or federal funding.
About the USS Bowfin (SS-287)
The USS Bowfin serves as the centerpiece of the museum. Launched on December 7, 1942, a year following the Pearl Harbor attack, this submarine is fondly referred to as “The Pearl Harbor Avenger.” Throughout its service, the Bowfin completed nine successful war patrols, earning numerous accolades, including the Presidential Unit Citation and Navy Unit Commendation.
The vessel is recognized as the best preserved and most visited submarine from World War II. In 1986, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior, drawing millions of visitors annually to its self-guided and audio tours.
The Museum and Exhibits
Adjacent to the Bowfin is a spacious 10,000 square foot museum displaying a remarkable collection of submarine-related artifacts. Visitors can explore submarine weapon systems, photographs, paintings, battle flags, original recruiting posters, and intricate submarine models, all highlighting the history of the U.S. Submarine Service.
An interesting exhibit includes a Poseidon C-3 missile, allowing guests to delve into its inner workings. Unique to the museum, it’s the only missile of its kind available for public display.
Additionally, the museum features a 40-seat mini-theater showcasing informative submarine-related videos.
Waterfront Memorial
Within Bowfin Park, a poignant public memorial honors the 52 American submarines and over 3,500 submariners lost during World War II. The valor of these submariners remains largely unsung, as they endured extensive confinement in perilous conditions aboard submarines, often volunteering for service rather than being drafted.
Of the 52 submarines lost, many succumbed to surface ships, aircraft, or mines, with some sinking along with their entire crew, now resting at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
