For many years, the Verde Canyon Railroad in Clarkdale has been delighting travelers with its breathtaking views, unique environment, and historical narrative. The train navigates through an area that was historically rich in mining activities and was once home to the ancient Sinagua people, whose remarkable cliff dwellings remain visible today. After the first two hours, once the train reverses direction back toward civilization, the atmosphere becomes quieter, focusing more on soothing background music. Traveling in first class offers a luxurious touch, featuring comfortable sofa-style seating along with a complimentary buffet of hot and cold selections. On our trip, tasty options included meatballs, chicken wings, fresh veggies with dip, assorted cheeses and fruits, and muffins. Although we initially purchased brown bag lunches at the depot, the onboard buffet made them unnecessary. In first class, one complimentary soft drink is provided upon departure. For those opting for standard seating, it resembles bus-style accommodations. Nevertheless, every passenger has access to an open-air car, allowing them to step outside for photos and scenic views before returning to their cozy railroad car.

Tips for Travelers

• No smoking is permitted on the train, including the open-air cars. However, passengers may smoke when the train is switched to the reverse direction after the first half of the trip.

• Many travelers opt to purchase a brown bag lunch and enjoy it before boarding the train.
• Remember to bring your camera and binoculars! Arriving at least an hour before the scheduled departure is advisable.
• The gift shop features various items for sale, and browsing through the shop, along with the small museum displaying historical artifacts of the train and region, can be an enjoyable way to pass the time.
• Passengers typically begin lining up for their assigned rail cars about half an hour prior to loading. Loading commences about 20 minutes before departure time. This is a smart move, as although all seats offer good views, the right side—specifically the conductor’s right—provides a superior window view.
