Vermont Town Considers Ban on Leaf-Peeping Tourists

Road Closures in Pomfret

The small town of Pomfret, Vermont, known for its stunning fall foliage, has recently closed several roads. This decision was made in response to numerous complaints regarding the overwhelming influx of tourists seeking the ideal autumn photograph.

According to a memo, these closures prohibit vehicle traffic from September 23 through October 15 due to “extraordinary tourism interest in private properties.”

Impact on Private Residences

One private residence attracting significant attention is Sleepy Hollow Farm. Travelers flock to this picturesque location, drawn by its charming rolling hills, traditional farmhouse scenery, and the vibrant hues typical of fall in New England.

Encouraging Respect for Property

Eric Duffy, municipal manager for the town and village of Woodstock, emphasized the community’s welcome to tourists while urging respect for private properties. “The appeal of Vermont is the foliage, and we all understand that,” Duffy stated. “However, it is essential to differentiate between a private home and a public space. There are ample places to enjoy the views, so please treat someone’s home as you would want yours to be treated.”

Duffy also highlighted several public spaces where visitors can soak in the best of fall, such as Mount Tom and the Billings Farm and Museum, as well as East End Park and the picturesque covered bridge in Woodstock.

Scenic Drives Highlighted

“Woodstock is open for tourists. We encourage everyone to experience what Woodstock has to offer,” Duffy remarked. Visitors can enjoy the historic downtown area, with seating outdoors to enjoy the surrounding foliage. Additionally, scenic drives along Route 4, Route 100, or Route 12 are highly recommended.

“It’s beautiful now, and it’s only going to get better as the leaves begin changing,” Duffy concluded.
