Setting the Scene
Just a stone’s throw from Il Duomo and some of Milan’s finest dining establishments, Vico Milano’s entrance has an intriguing allure. The ornate wooden doors share a Narnia-like quality, welcoming guests off one of Milan’s most famous streets, Corso Genova, into a serene courtyard. Here, plant-smothered walls and a scalloped glass and iron porch invite you inside.
Upon entering, a modernist chandelier hangs from the vast sloping ceiling of a tile-clad entrance hall. The spacious layout features walnut room doors lining the corridor, mirrors on the walls, and glass leading down to a smooth subterranean space that could easily be mistaken for a fashion designer’s urban sanctuary. The clever design creates reflections that enhance the feeling of space, with a striking décor of velvet, dark wood, and marble reminiscent of a private club.
The Backstory
Neri, part of the Baccheschi Berti family behind the exquisite Tuscan boutique Castello Vicarello, saw an opportunity to transform his mother’s disused Milanese showroom into a chic hub for modern travelers. This location was once a factory for the renowned Legnano racing bikes, and the guesthouse honors its creative history through a unique collaboration with Sicilian architect Giuseppe Alito. The design features a rich tapestry influenced by Neri’s heritage and travels—from wall hangings sourced from Bali, nodding to his Indonesian mother, to rose-glazed Moroccan tiles in the bathrooms sourced from Fez, and carpets from Iran.
The overall ambiance is quintessentially Milanese, designed to offer a glimpse into the city’s soul. The impeccably dressed General Manager, Lucianno, is always ready to recommend the best off-the-beaten-path spots for lunch or unique shopping experiences. As evening approaches, guests can enjoy large glasses of Castello di Vicarello’s red wine at the mirrored bar, preparing to step out into the captivating Milanese night.
