Victoria’s Tourism Revival: Reopening After Bushfires and COVID-19

Reopening Victoria: A New Era for Tourism

The past year has seen Victoria struggling with bushfires and COVID-19. However, there is good news on the horizon for this Australian state. With coronavirus cases staying low, the area is beginning to function in a more familiar way, as restrictions are lifted and tourism is preparing to once again start up.

Phased Reopening Plan

In a statement, Premier Daniel Andrews addressed the changes coming in the next few months, stating the intent to reopen Victoria in phases with safety as a priority. “With the rate of community transmission remaining low and the rate of testing high, we are in a position to implement a number of additional changes. While we can ease some restrictions, certain measures must remain in place,” Premier Andrews explained.

Return to Normalcy

Victoria has seen a return to face-to-face learning in schools, along with the reopening of outdoor playgrounds, skate parks, and communal gyms. From 31 May, home gatherings of 20 people will be allowed, while outdoor gatherings will also be limited to the same number. This development will allow for overnight stays at both private residences and hotels, thus revitalizing the tourism industry. Additionally, campgrounds and caravan parks without communal facilities such as kitchens and bathrooms will be permitted to reopen.

Entertainment and Cultural Venues

On 31 May, entertainment and cultural venues, including galleries, museums, drive-in cinemas, and historic sites, will reopen their doors along with zoos and outdoor amusement parks. It is important to note that physical distancing and a limit of up to 20 patrons per space will be enforced. Indoor venues will also be required to keep customer contact details. Swimming pools will reopen with limits of 20 people and additional safety protocols in effect. The message to Victorians is clear: those working from home should continue to do so until at least the end of June.

Future Relaxation of Restrictions

Depending on community transmission rates and testing data, Victoria plans to further relax restrictions from 22 June. On this date, up to 50 people will be allowed in restaurants, cafes, galleries, museums, and for the first time, cinemas and theatres. Additionally, ski season will open on this date, inviting outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the slopes once again.
