The Incredible Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport
After weeks of lockdown, testing has resumed for the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, an upcoming limited-edition, track-focused variant of the standard Chiron hypercar, of which the company will produce just 60 examples. Moreover, Bugatti had the forethought to capture some video footage of the Chiron Pur Sport in action around the 19-turn Bilster Berg racetrack in Germany, which we’re excited to share with you.
Chiron Pur Sport: A Superior Bugatti
The Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport was set to be revealed at the Geneva auto show this year; however, with the event canceled, the launch shifted online where we first glimpsed the car that will surely make standard Chiron owners green with envy. Differences between the Chiron and Chiron Pur Sport include:
- A fixed, full-width rear wing for enhanced downforce.
- Titanium exhaust tips to reduce weight.
- A revised front fascia and splitter.
- Weight savings of 110 pounds for improved performance.
- A significantly stiffened suspension featuring carbon-fiber anti-roll bars.
- Revised seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a 15-percent reduction in gear ratios.
- A higher 6,900-rpm redline from its quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 engine.
Stefan Ellrott, Bugatti development chief, noted, “The W-16 engine with 1,500 PS (1,479 hp) and 1,600 NM (1,180 lb-ft) of torque now feels like it revs up even faster, providing a significantly more tangible and emotive driving experience.”
Chiron Pur Sport: Pushing Performance Limits
Bugatti’s engineers and test drivers dedicated three days at Bilster Berg to tune virtually every major component of the Pur Sport while following social distancing standards. Ellrott emphasized, “This is crucial for development because the Chiron Pur Sport is set up for maximum performance and lateral dynamics. The laps on the test tracks are incredibly important here.”
The Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport navigates the circuit on specially developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, and they are pushed harder than ever with the Pur Sport’s stiffer chassis and track-oriented camber settings. Among the systems rigorously tested is the new ESC Sport + stability-control programming, designed for more experienced customers to enjoy their new $3,599,000 hypercars on the track. Fortunately, the feedback from testing has been very positive.
Chiron chassis development boss Jachin Schwalbe remarked, “Even for our engineers who are very familiar with the Chiron, this is so much fun that they don’t want to get out of the car. The Chiron Pur Sport makes you a better driver.”
Chiron Pur Sport: Performance Beyond Compare
Bugatti asserts that the Chiron Pur Sport will accelerate from 18 to 62 mph in sixth gear approximately two full seconds quicker than the standard Chiron, a remarkable achievement. Schwalbe explained, “Thanks to the new suspension geometry, the softer Michelin tires with even better grip, and the enormous rear wing, the acceleration of the Pur Sport out of corners is even more brutal. It’s simply a pure, uncompromising driving machine.”
Bugatti plans to conduct further testing at other tracks, including the benchmark Nürburgring Nordschleife, before the Pur Sport enters production later this year. As for prospective buyers, they can eagerly await their opportunity to experience the Chiron Pur Sport soon, akin to video footage available to enthusiasts everywhere.
