Vidin has existed for over 2000 years in the same location in Bulgaria. This charming town, while economically depressed, features a lovely, tree-lined city park along the Danube River leading to Baba Vida, a medieval fortress built between the 10th and 13th centuries. Notably, Baba Vida is one of the last remaining intact Bulgar fortresses, signifying the rich history of the region.
Additionally, Vidin boasts preserved sections of the city wall, a large downtown square, and a vibrant market, making it an intriguing place to explore on foot. The impressive architecture reflects a blend of cultures, including Roman, Bulgarian, Turk, and modern styles.
During our eastern European river cruise aboard the Viking Neptune, we docked in Vidin for a day of exploration. We ended our excursion to the famous rock formations of nearby Belogradchik and returned to the ship for lunch, followed by a delightful stroll through the town.
This memorial reflects the sentiments of many Bulgarians regarding the Communist repression they endured.
