Oman Simplifies Entry for Tourists with Visa-Free Travel
Oman has recently dropped its tourist visa requirement for visitors from 103 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, and New Zealand. Consequently, travelers can now stay for up to 10 days, provided they have a hotel reservation, health insurance, and a return ticket out of the country.
Previously, tourists visiting Oman were required to apply for a visa online before their arrival. The visa options included a 10-day stay for approximately US$13 or a 30-day stay for $52.
Since October, Oman has been gradually reopening its borders, allowing international flights for residents and citizens abroad. By the end of November, tourist visas were issued for the first time in about eight months. It’s noteworthy that tourism is the fastest-growing non-oil industry in Oman, and accommodation providers, along with tour operators, are eager to welcome visitors back to this beautiful destination.
Prior to the pandemic, Oman took significant steps to enhance connectivity with its neighbors, thereby becoming more accessible. In 2019, Dubai’s public transport system initiated a bus route that terminates in Muscat. Additionally, Oman’s visa application process transitioned online last year. However, with the recent visa-free travel announcement, visitors from many countries will no longer need to navigate this system.
Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Oman has recorded nearly 127,000 cases; however, the trend of new cases seems to be declining. New arrivals are required to complete an online pre-registration form prior to departure and must undergo a PCR test upon arrival at their own expense (approximately $65). Additionally, travelers are obliged to download a contact tracing application and take a follow-up PCR test after a week of isolation. It’s important to note that health insurance is mandatory, covering at least 30 days of coronavirus-related treatment.
