Sydney Modern: A New Era for Contemporary Art

Summer in Sydney evokes vibrant sunshine, pristine beaches, and ample opportunities for outdoor activities. This year, the pleasant weather also announces the completion of an ambitious artistic and architectural venture. The new Sydney Modern, an expansion of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, promises a world-class facility to showcase the best in contemporary art, opening on Friday, December 3rd.
Rising from the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain precinct, this expansion nearly doubles the existing exhibition space of the gallery. Acclaimed Japanese architectural firm SANAA designed the building, which harmonizes with the surrounding natural beauty. The glass-paneled exhibition areas resonate with the topography of the site, providing an immersive experience.
A unique feature of the project is the repurposing of a decommissioned naval fuel bunker into The Tank, an underground exhibition space. Additionally, a public art garden will be available for all, providing an inviting atmosphere at any time of day.
In celebration of the opening of Sydney Modern, nine artists have been commissioned to create works that resonate with the project and its environment. Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens was depicted in the 2022 Archibald Prize-winning portrait. Her installation will connect the Sydney Modern expansion to the original Vernon building, utilizing a niche in the sandstone façade. Furthermore, the installation from Taiwanese-American artist Lee Mingwei interacts with the building’s physical structure, transforming the external wall into an intimate space for reflection.
The opening week of the new gallery will feature several exciting events, including a series of discussions with exhibiting artists and a performance by Djinama Yilaga to inaugurate the new Yiribana gallery, dedicated to showcasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.

MOD Dining by Clayton Wells offers a contemporary dining experience, while a takeaway kiosk highlights native ingredients, with the menu curated by Gamileroi Elder Aunty Beryl Van-Oploo. The Art Gallery Restaurant, Crafted by Matt Moran, and the Gallery Café are also available in the existing building, providing diverse culinary choices throughout your day of art exploration. However, be mindful that these venues can get crowded during lunchtime.

For those wishing to explore beyond the gallery’s confines, the neighboring suburbs of Chippendale and Glebe are home to a remarkable array of restaurants and cafés, frequented by Sydney’s creative community.
