Volkswagen Atlas Basecamp Pack: Enhancing Off-Road Capabilities
The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas recently underwent a refresh, bringing improved aesthetics and minor interior upgrades. Moreover, the addition of the five-seat Atlas Cross Sport has enhanced its model lineup. However, Volkswagen has taken it a step further by introducing the Basecamp pack of accessories aimed at improving the off-road capabilities of this family vehicle. While the Atlas may not be the first choice for hard-core trail adventures like the Rubicon, its new features undoubtedly contribute to its versatility.
Upgrades and Accessories to Note
Initially slated for unveiling at the rescheduled New York International Auto Show, the Basecamp pack is not an extensive overhaul of the Atlas’s mechanical systems. Instead, it offers several key enhancements:
- New, tougher door sills and side skirts
- A two-tone bumper guard
- Fender flares to protect body sides
- Satin silver rear valance surrounding the exhaust tips
While these enhancements may seem primarily cosmetic, they provide additional protection against stones, dirt, and grime. Therefore, the Atlas is better equipped for off-road challenges.
Functional Enhancements
The most significant functional benefit of the Basecamp pack lies in the wheels and tires. Volkswagen collaborated with Fifteen52 to create an exclusive set of 17-inch Traverse MX wheels, which come equipped with 245/70R17 all-terrain tires. These wheels are available in either frosted graphite or radiant silver, offering options for customization. Consequently, these additions give the Atlas a rugged appearance, ready for off-road adventures.
Availability and Compatibility
Volkswagen stated that the Basecamp options would be made available to dealers by spring 2020. However, it’s important to note that these accessories are not compatible with R-Line-trimmed models. As of now, there are no updates regarding the availability of the Basecamp accessories for the Atlas Cross Sport.
In summary, the new base enters the market as a more capable vehicle equipped to handle various terrains, showcasing Volkswagen’s commitment to improving the Atlas’s off-road prowess.
