Discover the Luxurious Palazzo Rainis: A Blend of Croatian and Italian Charm
When checking in to the new Palazzo Rainis, you might wonder: Is this Croatia or is it Italy? In a way, it’s both.
Opening to guests on Mar. 25, this boutique hotel is located in the historic Croatian seaside city of Novigrad, housed in a new building designed in the style of neo-Renaissance Venetian palazzos. This design pays homage to the property’s original owner, Giovanni Rainis, who was from Venice. At the turn of the 20th century, he constructed a villa on this site in the same style, although the original building no longer exists. Fortunately, with the expertise of Croatian architecture studio Atellior, the villa has been reconstructed, expanded, and transformed into a luxurious boutique hotel.
2. Accommodations and Amenities
This hotel features two wings: one showcasing classical architecture and the other with modern flair. In total, there are 16 guest rooms, which include standard doubles in the modern annex overlooking the pool as well as the grand Bel Etage suite with sea views. Each room is an exquisite blend of old-world Italian luxury and contemporary design—imagine traditional herringbone parquet floors paired with plush velvet seating, and bold, Kelly-green bathrooms complemented by black-and-white geometric tile floors.
The public areas of the hotel include a restaurant called Chemistry, crafted by chef Tom Gretić, as well as a bar named Potions specializing in Croatian and Istrian wines and spirits. Both names honor Rainis’ extensive 63-year career as a pharmacist in Novigrad. Moreover, guests can relax at the spa, which features a sauna, steam room, gym, and outdoor pool, providing a holistic escape.
3. Local Attractions and Activities
Situated along the Novigrad Marina, the hotel is conveniently a 15-minute stroll from the picturesque red-roofed buildings of the old town and Rainis Beach, where guests can enjoy sunbeds and refreshment stations. Novigrad is a small city in the Istria region, located on Croatia’s northern coast, celebrated for its historic fishing villages and seafood cuisine. Consequently, this serene seaside destination serves as a perfect contrast to the bustling energy of Dubrovnik, a more crowded and popular Croatian hotspot. Visiting both places can significantly enrich your journey along the Dalmatian Coast.
The Palazzo Rainis, recognized as a Small Luxury Hotels property, invites travelers to enjoy its luxurious amenities and enchanting surroundings, with room rates starting at $310 per night.
