Weekly Global News Highlights
Seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen were killed in an Israeli military strike Monday as they were delivering food to starving civilians in Gaza. This tragic incident underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Israel Defense Forces stated that the incident is under investigation, describing the strike as a “grave mistake,” emphasizing that the intention was not to harm the aid workers.
The group included a diverse range of individuals: a Palestinian (Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha), an Australian (Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom), a Pole (Damian Sobol), a dual US-Canada national (Jacob Flickinger), and three Brits (John Chapman, James Henderson, and James Kirby).
Erin Gore, the CEO of World Central Kitchen, remarked, “These are the heroes of WCK. These seven beautiful souls were killed by the IDF in a strike as they were returning from a full day’s mission. Their smiles, laughter, and voices are forever embedded in our memories.”
World Central Kitchen, headquartered in Washington, DC, has been instrumental in providing meals to disaster-struck regions since its inception by Chef José Andrés in 2010. It stands out as one of the few aid organizations delivering critically needed food in Gaza, where 2.2 million people face food insecurity, with many at risk of starvation amid ongoing conflicts.
