Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump Under Investigation
The FBI is investigating what it said was an apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump at his Florida golf club on Sunday, September 15 — the second such incident in two months targeting the former president.
At the time of the incident, Trump was playing golf and thankfully, he was not harmed. A Secret Service agent observed a rifle barrel with a scope protruding from the perimeter fence of the golf course and “immediately engaged” with the suspect, firing shots at him, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.
According to the Secret Service, the suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, did not have a clear line of sight to Trump from where he was positioned. Routh reportedly did not fire a shot before a Secret Service officer directed fire at him, causing him to flee the scene. As of now, Routh only faces gun-related charges.
Trump, in a statement on Monday, emphasized the necessity of enhancing his security detail. He claimed to have conveyed this need to President Joe Biden during a call earlier that day. In response, Biden stated his intention to seek additional congressional support for the Secret Service following the incident.
