Charlie Hammerman, president and CEO of The Disability Opportunity Fund (DOF), shared the inspiring story behind this initiative, rooted in the advocacy of his uncle, Dr. Burton Blatt. The aim is to “push society to live beyond ADA compliance.” Consequently, The Schoolhouse Hotel stands as the first fully accessible boutique hotel where every room and amenity meets ADA standards.

Unique Design and Accessibility

Emphasizing the building’s historic significance, the hotel’s décor elegantly incorporates vintage school memorabilia. Each room’s name and design pay homage to classic school subjects like art and math. Genny Freiman, project manager at DOF, emphasizes the importance of going beyond standard compliance, highlighting the significant market of individuals and families wanting to travel.

The hotel was thoughtfully designed with accessibility in mind. Elements such as sensory-friendly design, counter heights, and automated services were carefully considered. Insights gained from engaging with individuals with disabilities were vital in shaping this unique experience.

Rooms are spacious and designed to accommodate guests using wheelchairs or scooters effortlessly. Accessible touch controls and low counters contribute to a comfortable experience. Furthermore, enhanced lighting and soundproofing measures optimize the environment for all guests.

The hotel bar exemplifies inclusivity, featuring a three-sided design where two sides are ADA compliant. The innovative approach allows the bartender to engage with patrons at eye level, promoting a sense of community.

The Schoolhouse Hotel also boasts several versatile event spaces. The former gymnasium has been transformed into a formal ballroom that can accommodate up to 300 guests. Additionally, a beautifully manicured front lawn is perfect for outdoor events, comfortably hosting up to 150 guests. For business travelers, a fully equipped conference room is available.
