Adventure in West Virginia’s New River Gorge: Whitewater Rafting, Zip Lining, and Tree House Camping

Discover Adventure at New River Gorge National Park

One of the country’s oldest waterways forms the backbone of our youngest national park. Liz Cantrell rides the New River through the heart of West Virginia.

Whitewater Rafting Thrills

The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world, formed around 320 million years ago. It pre-dates the Appalachian Mountain range and provides some of the finest stretches of whitewater rafting in the country. In December 2020, the New River Gorge was designated America’s 63rd national park, leading to a significant increase in visitation, especially with nearly 1.7 million visitors in 2021.

Exciting Zip Lining Experience

During my visit, I took part in a thrilling zip lining adventure. Under the guidance of Carlee Evans, I learned how to manage my speed by spreading my arms and legs to slow down. Racing through the canopy gave me exhilarating views of the breathtaking gorge.

Scenic Hiking Trails

After my adventures on the river, I explored the park’s popular Endless Wall Trail with Ranger Jodi French-Burr. We observed the local ecology, including the pink rhododendron, West Virginia’s state flower, while soaking in the stunning overlooks.

Mountain Biking Adventures

For my final adventure, I visited Arrowhead Bike Farm, a campground and mountain-bike shop in Fayetteville. Under the guidance of Travis Brown, I tackled the Long Point Trail, racing through the woods and savoring the adrenaline rush of mountain biking.

The Iconic New River Gorge Bridge

As I enjoyed my time in the gorge, I couldn’t help but notice the New River Gorge Bridge, one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia. Spanning over 3,000 feet and standing 876 feet tall, this breathtaking engineering marvel offers stunning views and has made crossing the river an effortless experience.

The calm moments among the rapids and the breathtaking views from the bridge culminated in an unforgettable adventure at New River Gorge National Park, showcasing the thrill of exploration.
