What About a V-8–Powered Gladiator 392 Pickup? Jeep Won’t Commit To It

The Future of the Jeep Gladiator: Will a V-8 Option be Available?

The V-8-powered 2021 Jeep Wrangler 392 is the latest addition to the off-road-oriented SUV’s ever-growing model line, which also includes gas-powered four- and six-cylinder engine options, as well as a turbo-diesel V-6. Despite sharing mechanical components with the Gladiator pickup, the SUV’s hybrid and V-8 powertrains are currently absent in the Gladiator’s options menu. Consequently, the pressing question remains: Will the Gladiator lineup add either option in the future?

The Wrangler 392 Powertrain

Jeep is clearly exploring the possibility of a Gladiator equipped with a powerful engine. A spokesman acknowledged that the Wrangler 4xe’s 375-hp plug-in hybrid powertrain and the robust 470-hp 6.4-liter V-8 could fit beneath the Gladiator’s hood, particularly as the truck’s design accommodates such capabilities. However, Jeep has also confirmed it is not yet ready to commit to producing the Gladiator with either option.

Development Paths of Wrangler and Gladiator

The reasons behind this pause in commitment are primarily due to the distinct development paths the Wrangler and Gladiator have taken. A spokesperson shared, “the 392 for the Wrangler was a project that was given a green light a while back.” This delay is understandable, as many Wrangler owners have called for an eight-cylinder variant of the vehicle. Furthermore, the JL-generation Wrangler has been around for over two years, while the Gladiator debuted in 2020.

Potential for Gladiator V-8

It is worth noting that the group working on the Gladiator can potentially benefit from the expertise of their Wrangler counterparts, who have already managed to integrate the V-8 engine into similar models. Therefore, if there is enough market demand, it is conceivable that Jeep might reconsider the notion of building a Gladiator 392. Highlighting market needs for a high-performance V-8 or plug-in hybrid 4xe model could sway the decision-makers at Jeep.

Awaiting Confirmation

Until we hear a definitive announcement from Jeep stating they have no plans to produce a Gladiator 392, there remains a glimmer of hope. The brand’s statement of “not making any commitments” suggests that there is still a possibility for a V-8 Jeep truck to be realized in the future.
