Subaru and Travis Pastrana Team Up for Epic Gymkhana WRX STI
Updated Oct. 20:Once upon a time, DC Shoes co-founder and future Hoonigan architect, Ken Block, drove a hopped-up 2006 WRX STI prepped by Crawford Performance around what was then the decommissioned Marine Corp Air Station El Toro in Southern California. In this unforgettable video, Block laid down massive power slides and thrilling AWD donuts, marking the debut of his first “Gymkhana” installment.
More than a decade has passed, accumulating millions of views, perhaps billions by now. Block has created a legacy with 10 chapters in the Gymkhana series, building a massive brand centered on automotive adventures. However, since the release of Gymkhana three, this iconic series has seen Block trading in Subaru for various Ford models, which understandably ruffled some Subaru enthusiasts. Fortunately, their hopes have been revitalized as Subaru of America unveils the next star of Hoonigan’s Gymkhana saga: a fierce-looking WRX STI.
The Exciting Collaboration
It’s hardly surprising given that news about Subaru and Hoonigan collaborating for this year’s Gymkhana video has circulated since May. Travis Pastrana, an extreme sports icon and Subaru rally driver, is now the chosen driver, stepping into Block’s shoes. This marks the first look at the STI designed for this monumental collaboration, and it’s nothing short of impressive.
The project, led by Vermont SportsCar, the company behind Subaru Motorsports USA’s rally vehicles, has birthed a one-off STI. This incredible machine features a unique wind tunnel-tested carbon fiber aero package and a robust boxer engine, equipped with an extraordinary aftermarket “screamer pipe” emerging from the engine bay. Additionally, it sports a long-travel suspension and a distinctly racy interior, setting the stage for exciting automotive feats.
Unveiling Specs and Design
UPDATE: Recent insights reveal that the STI is powered by a custom billet block for its 2.3L flat-4 boxer engine, capable of revving up to 8,000 rpm. This exceptional vehicle also boasts active aerodynamics designed for high-flying jumps, along with tires from Yokohama—a perfect fit for its performance capabilities. The striking modern-art livery was a collaborative effort among Hoonigan, Subaru of America, Inc., and Pastrana.
Will Subaru Regain Its Fanbase?
Though Ken Block’s Gymkhana series continues to enjoy popularity, it’s fair to acknowledge that its allure has diminished from its original magic. However, Subaru’s renewed involvement and this eye-catching STI could likely mend fences with dedicated Subaru fans. We eagerly await the next video installment to ascertain if this innovative partnership can recapture the essence of the earlier Gymkhana adventures.
