Top 8 Winter Activities in Tromso, Norway

Things to Do in Tromso in Winter

Undoubtedly, Tromso is a winter wonderland that ignites wanderlust in any adventure-seeking traveler.

Another significant attraction of Tromso is its accessibility, with comfortable direct flights from Norway’s capital, Oslo. Located within the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, stepping off the plane here during winter feels like entering a magical realm.

So, have I intrigued you? Great! To aid in your trip planning, I’ve compiled a list of thrilling, extraordinary winter activities in Tromso.

1. Chase the Northern Lights

Nothing compares to the exhilaration of witnessing the aurora borealis for the first time.

Tromso ranks as one of the world’s premier locations for experiencing the northern lights. During my visit, I had the wonderful surprise of witnessing the aurora borealis for four consecutive nights!

Tromso Northern Lights Tour

To catch a glimpse of the northern lights, participating in a guided tour is the simplest approach. Within Tromso, numerous tour operators offer a variety of northern lights tours, catering to all budgets, from individual excursions to affordable group journeys.

Being a budget traveler, I chose Chasing Lights on their Big Bus Tour, which exceeded my expectations. The guides were professional, courteous, and even lent camera gear to capture photos of guests against the backdrop of the lights.

Although these tours can be somewhat pricey, the big bus tour helped reduce costs. Alternatively, if you prefer more flexibility in your chase for the lights, a private tour is also available.

2. Try Dogsledding

These dogs love to run!

An exhilarating adventure for thrill-seekers in Tromso is a day of dog sledding.

Many tour operators in Tromso provide travelers with the opportunity to learn how to ride on a dog sled. This means you can hop aboard a sled pulled by energetic huskies and race through the snowy landscape like an Iditarod musher.

With minimal sunlight during winter, you can even choose to embark on a nighttime dogsledding tour, offering a chance to see the northern lights during your adventure—truly a two-for-one experience!

It gets extremely cold in Tromso, even during daylight, so ensure that you select a provider who supplies warm clothing for your dog sledding tour. Although these options may be a bit pricier, your comfort will be worth it.

3. Learn How to Snowshoe

There is no way to travel without snowshoes

Tromso also offers incredible opportunities for learning how to snowshoe. Nestled within a fjord, the countryside around Tromso features stunning views and unique lighting, as the sun only rises for a few hours each day.

If you’re new to snowshoeing, worry not! Most tour operators in Tromso welcome beginners and provide the necessary instruction before you strap on your shoes and head out.

As it’s quite cold in Tromso, choose a tour operator that offers additional warm clothing and boots.

4. Meet the Sami Reindeer Herders

If you have a passion for unique cultures, a day at a Sami reindeer farm is an absolute must.

The Sami are reindeer herders hailing from some of the coldest, most northern regions worldwide.

In Tromso, Sami farms provide a glimpse into the history and contemporary activities of the Sami people from Norway’s Lapland. I organized my Sami reindeer experience through Tromso Lapland.

Our guide introduced us to his family’s reindeer, shared traditional food, explained longstanding Sami traditions, and even performed a traditional Sami song known as a “joik.”

5. Go Skiing

Are you an adrenaline junkie searching for the ultimate spot to get your adrenaline pumping? Tromso’s ski trails are calling your name!

The region offers both downhill and cross-country skiing suitable for all skill levels. Winter, adorned with snow, is the perfect time to hit the slopes.

For those without skiing gear, Tromso Outdoor has everything you need for rent, from skis and boots to clothing.

6. Jump on a Snowmobile

Snowmobile out to the backcountry

What better way to explore Tromso’s vast fjords and majestic peaks than on a snowmobile? Tromso boasts various routes that anyone can navigate!

Numerous companies in Tromso offer “snowmobile safaris,” allowing visitors to discover the outskirts while enjoying the polar night’s crisp air.

Additionally, consider taking a night snowmobile ride, which, similar to dog sledding, provides an opportunity to admire the northern lights.

7. Spot Some Whales

If you’re seeking a thrilling yet laid-back adventure, set out to the sea with a boat ride to witness Norway’s majestic wildlife, including humpback and killer whales.

Relax and enjoy the stunning scenery, hoping for a glimpse of these magnificent creatures as they surface.

Winter offers some of the best opportunities for whale watching off Tromso’s shores, with numerous companies operating tours in the region.

Most whale-watching excursions take place during the day and can last between four to eight hours.

Your tour operator will inform you of necessary regulations aimed at protecting these beautiful animals before the start of your excursion.

8. Take a Polar Plunge

After an action-packed day filled with dog sledding, snowshoeing, and skiing, you might wish to unwind your fatigued muscles.

Onboard the Vulkana spa and adventure boat, you can do just that.

With a hot tub and sauna available, guests can enjoy breathtaking views of Tromso’s fjords while experiencing a peaceful spa atmosphere.

However, there’s an exciting twist: you also have the opportunity to take a polar plunge.

This daring activity involves leaping into the icy sea, where the water can be around 1 to 2 degrees Celsius.

Once you jump into the frigid water, you can return to the comfort and warmth of the Vulkana’s sauna and hot tub.
