Black Women Who Kayak+: Changing Lives One Paddle Stroke at a Time
Introduction
In 2018, Tanya Walker shared her very first post to Black Women Who Kayak, a Facebook group she created to connect with women of color in Austin who shared her passion for kayaking. This humble beginning ignited a movement that now boasts over 3,000 members across 12 chapters in the U.S. and continues to grow.
The Formation of Black Women Who Kayak+
Initially starting slow, Walker, who works in tech support for the City of Austin, dedicated herself to encouraging others. After hosting a few small kayaking meetups, she organized an exploration through Austin’s Whirlpool Cave, which turned out to be successful and brought many newcomers together.
“After three hours of army crawling and facing fears, I realized I needed to use this platform for more meaningful purposes,” Walker shared, reinforcing the idea that there are few boundaries to what Black and brown individuals can achieve when given opportunities.
Diverse Activities Offered
Today, the group offers much more than kayaking. Monthly meetups include hiking, biking, camping, surfing, sailing, and golfing, among other activities. Collaborating with national organizations, these enriching events are designed to empower members and broaden their horizons.
“Our mission is to place Black and brown people in spaces where they are often underrepresented,” Walker added, emphasizing the group’s commitment to inclusivity and opportunity for all women of color.
Personal Stories of Inspiration
Members like Missy Wilson share how their involvement has impacted their lives. “This group motivated me to try new activities I’d always wanted to do but felt hesitant about,” Wilson explained, noting the importance of seeing other BIPOC engaging in outdoor sports.
Wilson emphasized her desire for companionship among women who share similar experiences and backgrounds while enjoying nature. “It was essential for me to find a community that resonates with my perspective,” she said.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip
Wilson’s active participation in BWWK+ led her to an incredible opportunity: an all-expenses-paid, eight-day backpacking trip in Alaska. With the support of the National Outdoors Leadership School and through a raffle system, Wilson secured her spot and connected with other members for this adventure.
Thanks to the kindness of others, including a significant donation from Grape-Nuts to support pioneering women, Wilson was able to realize her dream trip, which included celebration and camaraderie amid the breathtaking Alaskan wilderness.
Conclusion
Through shared experiences and support, BWWK+ has empowered countless women to explore beyond their boundaries. “I hope other women will be inspired to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new challenges,” Wilson stated, reinforcing the message that joy can be found just beyond the fears that hold us back.
