Costa Rica has recently passed a law to grant visas to digital nomads. This new visa allows international visitors and their families to live and work in the country for a minimum of one year, providing an opportunity to embrace the relaxed ‘Pura Vida’ lifestyle while enjoying numerous benefits.

As a result of the pandemic, many countries have introduced special visas for remote workers, recognizing the growing trend of international digital nomadism. Countries like Georgia, Estonia, and Aruba have already embraced this shift. Thus, Costa Rica’s new initiative aligns with this trend, making it easier for individuals to stay and work from this beautiful Central American destination for up to two years.

It is anticipated that this initiative will significantly bolster the tourism sector and the local economy. The tourism board predicts that contributions from digital nomads could inject approximately USD $24,100 (15 million colones) annually, facilitating more job opportunities for local residents.

Costa Rica’s president, Carlos Alvarado, stated, “The digital nomad utilizes services, consumes food, makes purchases, utilizes transportation, and hires people—all of this generates more employment and growth in the country.”

Signed into law on August 11, the specifics of the visa application process are being finalized, with potential applications opening in the near future.

How to Apply for the Digital Nomad Visa

To apply for the digital nomad visa, applicants must provide proof of income exceeding US$3000 per month. If traveling with family, the combined income should reach US$5000 per month.

Furthermore, it is essential to obtain a medical insurance policy that covers the duration of your stay in Costa Rica. A one-time payment will also be required for the visa issuance; however, this amount has not yet been established.

While the application process has not yet launched, further details will be provided soon. Updates will be shared as new information emerges regarding this exciting opportunity.

In the meantime, Costa Rica continues to welcome tourists without quarantine or testing, though travelers must fulfill specific requirements.
