What is the Blue Flag?

The coveted Blue Flag program, run by the Copenhagen-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), is one of the world’s most recognized voluntary awards for beaches, marinas, and tourism boats. Awarded based on a series of stringent benchmarks, including water quality, environmental education, safety, and access, this accolade guarantees stunning beauty as well as a commitment to sustainability and top-notch amenities.

How is a Blue Flag awarded?

The municipality of the particular country typically applies for a Blue Flag and sends the application to the National Operator. Subsequently, the National Jury evaluates the applications for compliance and either approves or rejects them on a national level. Approved applications are then forwarded to the International Jury, which comprises eminent members from various organizations, including the FEE Board, UNESCO, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

All Blue Flags are awarded for one sailing or bathing season, usually spanning from June 1 to September 15, and are withdrawn at the end of the season. By renewing awards each season, the program ensures that beaches consistently meet the criteria. To date, a total of 5,038 beaches, marinas, and boats across 51 countries have received certification.
