“Through our relationship with SFO, we are confident this service will provide a valuable link for commercial and cultural exchange for our mutual customers,” said ZIPAIR President Shingo Nishida in a statement.

The new flight will operate five times each week between the U.S. and Japan on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. One-way fares will start at $91, making it an affordable option for travelers.

4. About ZIPAIR

ZIPAIR was established in 2018 and is a subsidiary of Japan Airlines, known for its luxurious economy seating. Currently, the airline operates flights to six international destinations, including Bangkok, Seoul, Honolulu, Singapore, Los Angeles, and San José.

The airline operates a modern fleet of Boeing 787 8 Dreamliner aircraft, providing complimentary Wi-Fi onboard for all customers. Additionally, passengers are allowed to bring up to 7 kilograms (15.4 pounds) of carry-on baggage for free. However, there are charges for additional services such as meals, which can be conveniently ordered through a smartphone or tablet.

5. COVID-19 Restrictions

Next month, Japan will lift all COVID-19-related border restrictions, ending vaccine and testing requirements as of May 8. Currently, travelers heading to the country must show proof of either three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine or proof of a negative test conducted within 72 hours of departure, as noted by the Japan National Tourism Organization.

Moreover, Japan also eliminated mandatory mask-wearing on March 13, reflecting a significant shift in its pandemic response.

6. Traveler Insights

The country opened its borders to individual travelers for the first time last year but implemented various rules initially, including allowing only supervised tours before gradually welcoming independent travelers back in the fall of 2022. This reopening signifies Japan’s commitment to reviving its tourism sector and welcoming international visitors once more.
